Welcome to our October newsletter. We have an exciting month ahead.  Our AGM is planned for Thursday October 19, 2017 followed by the  Official Opening of the Opening Doors Project the next day. 

During October we are also preparing for Community Partnership & Philanthropy Week, and will be undertaking filming at the Murray River Tea Rooms during October, which will showcase the outstanding support of the local community.

Congratulations and thank you to the Johnno's Run Team who participated in Run Melbourne on July 31, 2017.  I'm delighted to announce that this has raised more than $70,000  for our Opening Doors Project.

Thanks to everyone who supported Johnno's Run, either as a participant, donor or sponsor.

In other news, I'm very happy to share that Gillian Noelker has joined the CLRS team as my Executive Assistant.  Gill is enjoying meeting CLRS clients, families, staff, volunteers and community sponsors.

Murray River Tea Rooms - Our first week

Last week we opened the doors of Murray River Tea Rooms, following a busy and rewarding few months of planning, preparation and partnering with our community.

Combining a café in an Op Shop setting, this initiative is a result of a partnership with the households of Echuca Moama who donate items through a weekly kerbside collection program, combined with widespread support from the corporate sector. Volunteers also assist with a variety of aspects of the enterprise, from sorting and pricing items, building maintenance, shop displays and providing retail assistance. Some of our volunteers require support, others work or have previously worked in a variety of sectors, including trades and professional. Combined, our volunteers have a breadth of life experience enriching all involved.

The products from the kerbside collection are sold in the Tea Rooms (and in our Op Shop at 4 Percy Street Echuca), to cover rent and shop outgoings. The scones, cakes and slices are generously donated by local hospitality businesses, who share our vision of an inclusive community and believe in lifting others up. The revenue from the coffee and cake sales enable us to employ Barista staff who are imparting skills and experience to people with disability in a supportive environment. For some this is a dream come true. For some it is the first time they have been able to serve others. One young lady had been so excited to learn how to use an EFTPOS machine, and now is enthusiastically learning how to make lattes. Most just love the interaction with customers from all walks of life.

The Murray River Tea Rooms, Moama’s newest enterprise, promises to be a great addition to our community, building skills and confidence, reducing social isolation, and providing great coffee!

Thank you to all involved, and thanks to everyone who visited the Tea Rooms in our first week. We've been overwhelmed with the support and we look forward to welcoming you again soon!


Spirit of Sport and other news!

We've got some other exciting news too.  Not only has our Opening Doors Ambassador Brady Threlfall been named a finalist for the Riverine Herald Spirit of Sport Award, but Community Living & Respite Services is also a finalist in this category for our involvement in local sport.  This is in recognition of the outstanding community involvement in Johnno's Run in 2016.  We are looking forward to the Sportstar of the Year Awards Dinner on February 27, 2017.

The following night is our 11th Annual Fundraising Dinner, to be held at the Moama Bowling Club. The Dinner is almost fully booked - with just a few tickets remaining.  Thank you to the wonderful sponsors and supporters within our community and beyond,whose generosity makes such a positive difference in our community.

Our final newsletter for 2016 has been released.  It has been a busy and productive year, and once again Community Living & Respite Services Inc. has appreciated the support of our community.

This past year our Opening Doors Ambassadors have worked very hard to raise the awareness of CLRS and our Opening Doors Project.  We are delighted to share a video showcasing their passion and commitment, as part of the Community Philanthropy and Partnerships Week Celebration.

Award Recipients

We are delighted to announce that at this week's Annual General Meeting a past Board member, Jan Rankin, received a Life Membership in recognition of her outstanding contribution to Community Living & Respite Services Inc. over the past 30 years.  Jan has contributed in many ways, including having an active role in raising funds for a number of housing projects over the past 11 years.  

Brett Sands was awarded the inaugural Cletus Gilmour Fundraising Award, recognising Brett's outstanding contribution to Community Living & Respite Services Inc. and in particular his commitment to raising funds to increase services for people with disability.  Cletus' family, Peter, Fleur and Bree were delighted that Brett was chosen as the first recipient of this award.  

Both Jan and Brett are Opening Doors Project Ambassadors.

September News

Spring has sprung!  It's been a long cold winter, so let’s hope that this means success for our farming community.

We are pleased to announce that Andrew Cowin has been appointed to a vacancy on the CLRS Board.  Andrew has shown strong support and commitment to our organisation, and we look forward to him making a valued contribution to the governance of CLRS.  As part of Andrew's induction he visited some of our sites, including Recyclability.  Pictured below is Andrew with Recyclability volunteer Kim Boland.  Kim was telling Andrew that she enjoys volunteering at Number 4, and has been helping 3 days a week for the past twelve months.  During this time Kim has become very confident meeting new people, serving customers and undertaking a whole range of administrative duties.

This week we applied for the Volunteering Victoria 2016 Awards in two categories - Innovation and Inclusion.  We could have applied in all the categories, as Recyclability is a social enterprise that provides so many opportunities for volunteering.  We have volunteers from as young as 7 years and our oldest volunteer is 87 years.  Volunteers come from all walks of life, including school students, retirees, people with disability, job seekers and corporate volunteers.  The ANZ staff team in Echuca have registered to become CLRS volunteers and will be volunteering during work time at Recyclability.

We have received very generous donations in the last month for our Opening Doors Project.  Thank you to Moama Community Village Lions Committee who donated $5,000 and the Moama RSL who donated $15,000.  We hope to have the tender documents completed in the very near future for the Opening Doors Project - a home and 2 units for people with disability.  We are very much looking forward to this project coming to fruition.

August Newsletter 2016

It's August already!  That means, just one month of winter to go.  We have been fortunate that the wet and cold weather hasn't impacted too much on our programs and events.  The recent Club Teen holiday program was planned to keep everyone warm - with a highlight being toasting marshmallows and campfires.

We were also fortunate that Melbourne put on a sunny, albeit cool, day for Run Melbourne late July. This event was enjoyed by 127 participants and their families and friends.  An amazing $80,000 has been raised for our Opening Doors Project.  Thanks to the Opening Doors Ambassadors for their role in promoting Johnno's Run and the Opening Doors Project. Brady Threlfall and Brett Sands excelled in their Johnno's Run leadership roles, encouraging each participant with their training goals and not only personally raising significant funds, but helping others with various other events and activities. Johnno's Run 2016 was a fantastic event, embraced and supported by our generous community.
